Regional Councillor Chris Leahy, who made public a $1 million spend on a revolving door at the Regional Municipality of Durham, has fired yet another shot at the institution.
He is claiming that whistle blowers have sent him evidence to suggest Durham Regional government has equipped each of the four renovated kitchens with $16,000 worth of refrigerators for a presumed grand total of $64,000.
“What’s truly remarkable is that they don’t even come with ice cube trays because there is no freezer portion to these refrigerators,” he said.
Asking for Full Disclosure of Renovation Costs
“This most recent revelation makes my motions for full disclosure of the renovation costs even more relevant,” said Leahy.
The councillor has three motions coming to the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday September 10.
“I have a motions asking for detailed financial disclosure, a value for money audit, and creating a system for greater financial accountability.”
Leahy has encouraged members of the public register to speak to his motions at the September 10th committee meeting by visiting Durham.ca or calling 311 and asking for assistance in registering.
“After news of the million dollar revolving door were reported in the media, I started to get anonymous
messages from people working for Durham Region HQ about other questionable expenditures. Three of them were about the renovated kitchens,” said Leahy.
Renovations to the Regional Headquarters and other facilities were conducted under the auspices of the Workplace Modernization Plan with an approved budget of $53.8 million, Leahy said.
