Courtice incident was a fleeing suspect: DRPS

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) East Division yesterday thanked the citizens of Courtice for remaining calm last [Wednesday] night while members searched for a party that had struck a police cruiser and fled on foot.

“We understand that there was some confusion due to social media posts from community members,” said a DRPS tweet.

“But this was NOT an active shooter investigation. Yes, there was a large police presence and we understand that can be intimidating to the community, however, if there was a risk to the safety of our community, we would have issued some tweets through Corporate Comms acc’t,” DRPS added.

On Wednesday, October 28, 2020, at approximately 8:10 pm, a members of East Division attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a Ford F-150 pick-up truck near a motel on Highway 2 in Courtice. When the officer activated his emergency lights, the suspect vehicle reversed and rammed the police vehicle, said a police statement issued yesterday.

The driver jumped out of the truck leaving his passenger behind. The male passenger was detained and later released. Members of East Division with the assistance of York Regional Police Air2 and K-9 searched the area with negative results. The suspect was observed running through the residential area in Courtice, police said.

There were no reported injuries as a result of the collision. This investigation is ongoing and police continue to look for the suspect, police said.

Suspect is described as male, dark complexion, 6′ tall, slim build. He had on a red hoody and lost his shoes during the foot pursuit.
