Driver charged for failing to secure newborn in child seat

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday said officers charged a driver for failing to ensure a newborn child was safely secured in a car seat.

“DRPS would like to remind drivers that car seats are required for all children, including newborns/infants. Check your local area for car seat clinics being offered,” said a police tweet.

A statement said the incident occurred on October 19 at Salem Road and Blowers Crescent in Ajax.

An officer from DRPS Traffic Enforcement Unit observed a vehicle speeding on Salem Road. A traffic stop revealed a newborn baby in the arms of an adult passenger in the rear seat. However, a car seat was found in the trunk of the vehicle.

The two persons “were forced” to install the car seat prior to departure, the statement said.
