Driver flees after hitting mom and kid, found, arrested

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday said a mother and her five-year old kid were hit by a vehicle that failed to remain on the scene.

On Monday, December 11, members of Central West Division responded to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in Whitby call. The vehicle failed to remain and fled the scene. Officers later located the suspect vehicle and took the driver into custody, said a police report.

It said the officers responded around 5:25 pm in the area of Dunlop Street West and Brock Street South in Whitby.

The female suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local area hospital. The five-year old sustained minor injuries, police said.

Officers searched the area and found the suspect vehicle in the area of Dundas Street West and Frances Street in Whitby. The driver was taken into custody without incident.

A 53-year old male from Clarington has been charged, police said.
