Driving Alert: Monday morning freezing rain and icy roads

Environment Canada has issued a Freezing Rain Warning in effect for Southern Durham Region for this morning.

It warned of freezing rain leading to ice build-up on some surfaces.

“A low pressure system is approaching southern Ontario and will bring a mixture of precipitation to the area. Precipitation is expected to begin as freezing rain or rain Monday morning. The freezing rain is expected to transition to rain or drizzle near midday as temperatures rise above the freezing mark,” said the weather agency.

It said areas near Lake Ontario are expected to receive mostly rain through this event.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces,” said Environemtn Canada.

It forecast easterly winds of 20 kmh gusting to 40 in the morning; high of plus 2ºC, and a wind chill of -6ºC in the morning.

Tonight is likely to be cloudy with 40 per cent chance of showers or drizzle in the evening. Fog patches may develop near midnight. Temperature to rise to 5ºC by morning.
