DRPS urges residents to use phone, web

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has made changes to some of its non-emergency services, effective March 17, in response to the ever-changing nature of the Covid-19 pandemic and in keeping the health and safety of its members and the community.

  • Public front desks at each of the five DRPS divisions are restricted to emergencies only. Call our non-emergency line at 1-888-579-1520 to speak with an officer about less serious inquiries.
  • Police Record Checks counter at Durham Region Headquarters is closed (605 Rossland Road, East). Any completed police record checks cannot be mailed or picked up during this closure.
  • Public access to the Property Bureau is closed (19 Courtice Court, Courtice). If you have any questions, please call 905-579-1520 ext. 4700.
  • The Pay Duty system is suspended until further notice.
  • Two events are cancelled: Gowns for Girls and Suits for Youths. Thank you to everyone for the donations.
  • Victim Services of Durham Region is offering telephone support to clients and face-to-face meetings are in emergency situations only. Online and phone support is available to victims at 905-721-4226 or victimservicesdurham.ca.

What you can do:

  • Call 9-1-1 in the case of an emergency.
  • Report less serious crimes online at www.drps.ca under Online Services.
  • Apply online for a police record check: Online Record Checks. The completed check cannot be picked up and will not be mailed.
  • If you are experiencing symptoms when attending any of our divisions, please follow the signs posted. This includes picking up the telephone in the vestibule to talk directly to a member of our service.
  • If attending any site, please disinfect your hands with the sanitizer provided.

The DRPS said it is committed to the health, safety and well-being of the community. It urged residents to remain calm and follow the direction of public health officials to help slow the spread of Covid-19.

As this pandemic progresses, DRPS primary responsibility is emergency response and it is focusing efforts on attending to the most critical situations first.

“We appreciate your understanding in keeping our members safe. Please check our website at www.drps.ca and our social media channels for further updates,” the announcement said.

POSTPONED – Police Services Board Meeting

As a result of the public health concerns arising from Covid-19, and to encourage social distancing, DRPS advised that the Police Services Board meeting scheduled for March 24, has been postponed indefinitely. The board will convene a teleconference to address the confidential matters on its agenda.

The board will continue to receive updates from the senior leadership of the DRPS on operational matters related to Covid-19, and members of the public are encouraged to monitor and follow advice and direction from local, provincial and national health authorities.

The Durham Regional Police Services Board is the civilian governing body of the Police Service. Its responsibilities include establishing objectives for policing in consultation with the Chief of Police, setting policies for the effective management of the Police Service, and hiring and monitoring the performance of the Chief of Police. The Board consists of seven members, three appointed by the Province of Ontario and four chosen by Regional Council.
