Durham experiencing a boom in clean tech

Durham is experiencing a boom in the clean technology sector, according to a statement issued on behalf of Marci Ien, Federal Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth.

Minister Marci Ien toured the ACE facility at Ontario Tech University on Wednesday, where she met with undergraduate students preparing to enter the clean technology and innovation workforce.

The statement said they will benefit from the jobs created by the investments in Clean Tech in Budget 2023.

“Today I met with students at Ontario Tech University who are at the center of our transition towards clean energy, and I’m so proud of the work they are doing to make our country greener,” said Minister Ien. “As I spoke to the students, I saw how passionate they were about their studies, and they told me about all the exciting job opportunities that are waiting for them after they graduate.”

The budget provides investment tax credits that will help produce, manufacture, and promote the use of clean energy and clean technology in Canada. This, in turn, will support good jobs for the middle class and a clean, made-in-Canada economy for generations to come, the statement said.

The 2023 budget:

  • Introduces a 15 per cent refundable Clean Electricity Investment Tax Credit for eligible investments in technologies required for the generation and storage of clean energy and its transmission between provinces and territories, which is available to taxable and certain tax-exempt entities;
  • Introduces a refundable Clean Technology Manufacturing Tax Credit to cover 30 per cent of investments in new machinery and equipment used to manufacture or process clean technologies and extract, process, or recycle key critical minerals; and
  • Moves forward with Tax Credits for to reduce emissions through the Clean Hydrogen Investment Tax Credit, Expanding the Carbon Capture Credit, and expanding eligibility for the refundable 30 per cent Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit to include geothermal energy systems

“When we clearly see that our young bright minds are exceling in a field like clean technology, we know that we need to continue building on this progress, which is exactly what we are doing through the clean technology investments in the federal budget. We know that Canadian students and workers are some of the most talented and resourceful in the world, and we are committed to making sure that Canada does not fall behind at this moment of profound global economic opportunity,” said Minister Ien.

Durham is also home to small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) technology at the Darlington power station, that supports its status as a global powerhouse in clean technology.
