Two tried to get fraudulent insurance cheque reissued

Durham Police yesterday said two males have been arrested and are facing fraud charges after attempting to have a fraudulent cheque re-issued by an insurance company.

On April 5 at about 2:50 pm, members from West Division attended an insurance company in the area of Westney Road South and Fairall Street, Ajax for four males attempting to have a fraudulent cheque re-issued using a fraudulent cheque, said a police statement.

An employee recognized the cheque to be fraudulent and contacted police. Prior to police arrival, two of the suspects fled the area. Two suspects were arrested on scene. Further investigation led to the seizure of multiple counterfeit identity documents and falsified banking documents, it said.

One suspect of Niagara Falls was charged and released on an undertaking.

The other from Dundalk, Ontario, was charged and held for a bail hearing.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Det. Jaciuk of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5353.
