Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) have sent out a warning about a new scam method that has been occuring.
The scammer will text you claiming to be a child or relative who hes broken their phone. They may say things like they’ve dropped their phone on the ground or in the toilet and it no longer functions. They will ask for money electronically for a new cell phone. Always double check with your family members to prevent being scammed.
Please be aware of this new scam as well as all other common scams. Knowledge is the key to staying safe and in control. Spreading this information to loved ones and friends is your number one tool for prevention and safety, said police.
