Durham starts work on preferred way to widen Ritson Road

Durham Region has started a Municipal Class Environmental Study for widening Ritson Road (Regional Road 16) from north of Taunton Road (Regional Road 4) to South of Conlin Road in the City of Oshawa.

The widening of Ritson Road was identified as preferred solution for operational deficiencies, road safety and increasing traffic volumes, said a region statement.

The corridor was analyzed for capacity and safe operations and the study recommended that the road widening is best from existing two/three lanes to four/five lanes.

The next part of this study is to present the recommended design including the following:

  • Reconstruction and widening to 4/5 lanes, with concrete median.
  • Access restriction at some locations.
  • Replacement of an existing watermain from Taunton Road to Luple Avenue.
  • Relining of an existing sanitary sewer.
  • Installation of new storm sewers.
  • Full urbanization of the corridor.
  • A new multi-use path on the east side and maintaining sidewalk on the west side
  • A new signalized intersection at the southern Waste Management Facility (WMF) access.
  • Upgraded roadway illumination.
  • Signal upgrades and modifications.
Phase 3

The study will be moving on to Phase 3, which is, examining alternative methods of implementing the preferred solution.

Phase 4 will be preparing an Environmental Study Report. The study will review alternative design concepts for the reconstruction and widening of Ritson Road including intersection modifications within the study area.

A key component of the study is consultation with interested parties and the public, and we want to hear from residents. The region will hold a Public Information Centre on June 24th to present the study process and next steps. The meeting will be held at Kedron United Church in Oshawa from 6 to 8:30 pm.
