Durham team Sledgehammers are Ontario champions

In a thrilling display of skill and teamwork, the Region of Durham Sludgehammers have won the provincial championship at the 2025 Operations Challenge at the Water Environment Association of Ontario (WEAO) conference in London, Ontario.

The four-person wastewater professionals team consisting of captain Adam Hubers, Kirk Gonsalves, Matt Moffat, and Kevin Round, led by coach Andy Griffin, secured gold in Process Control and Safety, and placed second in Laboratory, Collections, and Pump Maintenance, making them the overall event champions, said a region statement.

The Operations Challenge is a competition that tests the essential skills necessary to operate and maintain wastewater facilities effectively. Teams from across Ontario compete in five different skill-based events: process control, laboratory testing, pump maintenance, collection, and safety.
