Commuters in Durham heaved a sigh of relief as the last toll on a government-owned 400-series highway – Highway 407 East – was finally withdrawn from Sunday June 1.
“I’m so happy. I live in Clarington and work in York and I use Highway 407 every work day. No toll on Highway 407 East from Clarington to Pickering will have a substantial long term impact on my daily travel budget,” said Sheena Amos.
On Sunday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford (top image) announced: “As of today, we’ve taken tolls off Highway 407 East, saving daily commuters $7,200 each year.
The Promise
“That means that there isn’t a single publicly-owned tolled highway anywhere in Ontario – and under our government, there never will be again,” Ford promised.
The premier had issued an election promise to remove the only remaining toll on a government highway if re-elected (see below).
A notice from Highway 407 ETR to users confirmed: “Provincial Highway 407 (Brock Road to Highway 35/115) free beginning June 1.
Both residents and municipalities have been campaigning for a long time for the removal of the toll.
