Repairs to shut down Church Street Bridge in Ajax until fall

The Town of Ajax has announced that the Church Street Bridge over Duffins Creek, located about 60 meters north of Highway 401, will be closed for repairs starting this summer. Originally constructed in 1960, the bridge is now in need of maintenance and rehabilitation, as identified through recent lifecycle and condition assessments.

The town has retained KB Civil Constructors Inc. to carry out the Church Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project. According to the contractor, the bridge will be closed from July 1, to September 30, to allow for the necessary construction work to be completed. The closure will impact Church Street between Mill Street and Durham Live Avenue.

During this time, Westney Road will serve as the designated detour route for both northbound and southbound traffic. A detailed detour route plan will be implemented, including signage, updates on the Town of Ajax website, and notifications through social media.

In compliance with the town’s Road Occupancy/Road Closure By-Law, road closure signs will be posted at least 10 days prior to the closure. Notifications will also be sent to local residents, emergency services, School Boards, and Durham Region Transit.

The rehabilitation work will include:

  • Waterproofing and removal/replacement of the existing asphalt on the bridge deck
  • Excavation and rock protection at the South Pier to address severe erosion
  • Partial depth concrete removal and repairs to the abutments, piers, and girders
  • Jacking of the bridge superstructure
  • Setup of a work area and scaffolding

The Town of Ajax emphasizes that every effort will be made to complete the work efficiently and minimize the duration of the closure. Residents or businesses expecting major deliveries during the construction period are encouraged to contact the project team in advance.
