Bear seems to have wandered into urban Durham

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday reported the sighting of a bear in north Durham.

“There has been a bear sighting near Mill Street and Bay Street in Beaverton. Last seen heading south on Mill Street,” said a police alert yesterday after noon.

It said DRPS is in the area and cautioned residents “please do not approach the bear”.

About an hour later, an all-clear was sounded.

“Officers have checked the area and spoken with residents. It appears the bear has returned to the wooded area. For more information on bear safety and how to report bear sightings visit.

Bear sighting are common during spring as hungry bears wake up from hibernation and wander into urban areas in search of food. They have been sighted as far down south as Courtice in Clarington previously (see below).
