Expected 10cm of first snow of the season overnight

Environment Canada last evening issued a winter weather travel advisory in effect for overnight.

It said Durham could see snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 cm. There will be poor visibility due to heavy snow at times.

The snow fall began late evening and continued overnight, tapering to light snow Wednesday morning.

“An approaching low pressure system will make its way over Lake Erie… bringing snow for much of southern Ontario. An enhanced area of snow may develop from Lucan through Peterborough, reducing visibilities in heavy snow and resulting in snowfall amounts closer to 10 cm. Areas outside of this enhancement will receive closer to 5 cm,” said Environment Canada.

For southern Ontario [including southern Durham], it said easterly winds off Lake Ontario are expected to enhance this snowfall for much of the Golden Horseshoe, significantly reducing visibilities in heavy snowfall. There is a potential for snowfall amounts to exceed 10 cm in a few locales.

This is the first significant snowfall of the season for most areas.

Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Slow down driving in slippery conditions. Watch for taillights ahead and maintain a safe following distance. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow, it added.

DRPS Central East Division said this morning if you’re waking up to snowy roads and a snow covered car leave extra time for the commute and to clean your car off.

The Traffic Team will be out educating drivers on the importance of a clear windshield.
