Festive RIDE: Four young drivers caught for no-alcohol breach

Durham Regional Police Services (DRPS) completed its second week of the Festive R.I.D.E program, stopping more than 1,370 vehicles and charging 15 drivers with impaired driving offences.

Four G1/G2 young driver licence holders were found in breach of No Alcohol Condition.

Durham Regional Officers conducted RIDE checks throughout the region, with the following totals (the numbers in brackets reflect 2020 first week totals for comparison):

1,370 (1,757) Vehicles stopped by R.I.D.E.
64 (33) People given Roadside Breath Tests
5 (3) People received “3-Day Suspensions” for registering a “WARN”
3 (0) Novice Driver received a 3, 7 or 30 Licence Suspension
15 (7) People were charged with Drinking and Driving Offences
4 (6) Criminal Code Charges
4 (n/a) G1 G2 / Young Driver Licence Holder Breaches of No Alcohol Condition
65 (104) Charged with various Highway Traffic Act offences
0 (2) Drug Offences

After the second week, the Festive RIDE team has charged a total of 19 people for impaired driving offences. One party was charged as a result of a fatal collision serving as a tragic reminder of the dangers associated with impaired driving.

Note: Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, anyone charged with a drinking and driving criminal offence will have his or her driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and there vehicle impounded automatically for seven days.
