Foggy wet day keeps Durham traffic police busy

There were some misses and some crashes on a wet, slick and foggy day as Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) officers responded across the region to traffic incidents.

DRPS North Division reported a close call.

A van crashed into a pole (top image) while approaching an active cross walk at dismissal time on Wednesday. The incident took place near RH Cornish Public School in Port Perry.

“Please drive slowly and cautiously through school zones or any other area where children could be walking or playing,” said a police tweet.

DRPS Traffic Services reported a driver “trying to sneak up on me out of the fog! It didn’t work as my rear antenna works perfectly!”

The incident (below) took place at Altona and Whitevale Road in the City of Pickering.

While stopping a speeding driver (below) at Taunton Road and Warner Drive in the Town of Ajax, DRPS Traffic Services warned road users to think about environmental conditions.

Heavy fog, wet roads, light rain + add high speeds which could end in tragedy OR enforcement. Please slow down and arrive alive, it said.

OPP Highway Safety Division also warned drivers of low visibility due to fog across the GTA.

Turn on your full headlighting system and be ready to stop quickly if needed, it advised.

DRPS East Division said despite wet roads and fog making for hazardous conditions for driving, they clocked a driver (below) doing 86kmh in a posted 50kmh and Community Safety Zone on Raglan Road East of Simcoe Road North.

Fines were increased, it said.
