Free home assessment for weather + cheap green loan

Durham Region is expanding its Durham Greener Homes program with the launch of a new Weather‑ready Home Assessment and low‑interest loan program.

Available at no cost to residents, the Weather‑Ready Home Assessment helps homeowners, landlords and tenants understand how their homes may be impacted by extreme heat and cold, flooding and windstorms.

Launched at the Durham Home Energy and Electric Vehicle Expo on May 2, the free assessment is offered both on‑site and virtually across Durham Region. Participants receive a customized report with clear, home‑specific recommendations, ranging from simple do‑it‑yourself actions to larger retrofit opportunities, said a region statement.

Delivered in partnership with Windfall Ecology Centre, Durham Greener Homes provides guidance to help residents navigate home energy and weather-ready upgrades.

Durham Greener Homes Loan Program

To help residents move from planning to action, Durham Region has also introduced the Durham Greener Homes Loan Program, offering low‑interest financing for eligible energy retrofit upgrades, such as insulation, air sealing and heat pumps. Residents who connect with a Durham Greener Homes coach can also learn more about available incentives for deeper energy retrofits, including an additional $5,000 for Whitby residents.

“By expanding the Durham Greener Homes program, we’re making it easier for residents to access free tools that support comfort, efficiency and sustainability at home. With spring being a time when many people are already focused on home improvements, this program helps turn those efforts into long‑term energy savings and weather readiness,” said John Henry, Regional Chair and CEO.
