Free on-street Wi-Fi pilot in downtown Oshawa core

Durham Broadband, an affiliate of Oshawa Power, is installing a pilot Wi-Fi area supporting businesses in the downtown core.

A ‘Connected Corridor’ spanning four downtown blocks, beginning at King Street and Centre Street. and running east to Mary Street, will be connected with free, on-street Wi-Fi. When in the area, visitors will be encouraged to use their smartphones ― log in once to obtain Wi-Fi in the corridor and receive meal deals and business promotions directly to their device.

Infrastructure and businesses need to keep up with demand, and creating Wi-Fi-accessible areas for the community is the project’s underpinning, said a statement.

“This is one of the many projects that support community needs and demonstrates Durham Broadband’s agility and ability to build the infrastructure needed to create a modern city, “said Ivano Labricciosa, President and CEO of Oshawa Power.

Domenic Albis, President of Downtown Oshawa Business Alliance (DOBA), supports a permanent approach to this pilot, stating, “This level of connectivity will open the doors to creating a more connected, digitally-enabled and prosperous community.”

DOBA and the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce are promoting the ‘Connected Corridor’ with signs and banners for instructions on using the service and sign-in process.
