Have you heard of the broken phone scam?

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday warned residents of a new scam doing the rounds.

The scammer sends a text claiming to be a family member saying their cell phone is broken and need immediate assistance in making a payment.

If you’ve been victimized by this type of fraud, you can make a report online at http://drps.ca or contact @canantifraud, said the police.

Helpful Tips

  • Do not trust ID names and phone numbers as scammers use spoofing
  • Never send money or personal information to unknown names, phone numbers or email addresses
  • Always confirm text messages with the family member first, if making an unusual payment request
  • Be suspicious of any unusual or urgent request to send money via e-transfer, cyrpto currency or gift cards
  • Be careful what you post online as scammers can easily manage to get phone number details and names on social media.
