High winds knock down trees, force trail closure

Strong winds yesterday knocked down trees, caused power outages across Durham as well as forced the closure of at least one trail.

Town of Ajax yesterday announced that the entire Rotary Park bridge and the trail that connects on the west side of the bridge is closed. The playground to the East of the bridge and the trail heading east remains open.

“Rotary Park Bridge and waterfront trail to the west of Rotary Park are closed until further notice due to a tree split from high winds,” said a couple of tweets from Ajax adding “Thank you for your patience 💚 an update will be provided once the bridge/trail have reopened”.

Utility companies such as Oshawa Power and Elexicon reported power outages, caused in part due to high winds and “tree contact”.

Continued outage due to tree contact in City of Pickering affecting 4690 Lakeridge Road, read one of Elexicon tweets.

City of Oshawa issued alerts saying strong and gusty winds are expected this afternoon.

“Try to secure your waste collection items by placing heavier items on top to prevent them from blowing away,” it said.
