Homeowners can get up to $12,000 by adding new units

The Town of Ajax is offering financial incentives to encourage the development of additional dwelling units (ADUs) such as basement apartments, garden suites, and garage conversions through its new Build More, Get More Grant Program.

According to a release from the Town of Ajax, eligible applicants can receive a fixed cash grant based on the number of ADUs they add to their property. The breakdown is as follows:

  • 1 unit – $2,000 grant (maximum $2,000)
  • 2 units – $3,000 per unit (maximum $6,000)
  • 3 units – $4,000 per unit (maximum $12,000)

The town notes that grants will be provided after a building permit has been issued, construction is completed, and the permit has been officially closed.

The initiative is aimed at increasing the town’s housing supply and supports recent zoning changes that permit up to four residential units on a single lot. The Town of Ajax states that the program is funded in part by the federal Housing Accelerator Fund, through which Ajax is receiving $22 million over four years to support new housing development.

The program is open to homeowners, landlords, and developers. More information is available through the town’s new online housing portal at ajax.ca/housing.
