How to stay safe on roads, water this long weekend

The first long weekend of the summer is here and as Canada Road Safety Week continues, DRPS is reminding the public to be responsible on the roads and waterways.

As some outdoor activities open up again, many will be heading outdoors to enjoy the Victoria Day weekend and the unofficial kick-off to summer.

Officers will be out this weekend to combat impaired driving, seat belt use, aggressive driving and distracted driving, said a police statement.

“The May long weekend also kicks off National Safe Boating Week. If you’re going out on the water this weekend, BE SAFE! Make sure you have a life jacket or PFD that is visible on the lake, fits properly, is in good condition and is approved in Canada.

“Our Marine Units will be patrolling the waterways in Durham Region. Boaters are reminded that there is a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to operating a vessel under the influence of drugs or alcohol and that the operation of a vessel while impaired carries the same penalty as driving a vehicle while impaired. Penalties can include license suspension, fines, and incarceration. Be sure to check your vessels and ensure the required safety equipment is on board at all times, such as personal floatation devices, distress equipment and navigation equipment,” the statement added.

Be patient on the roads and be courteous to your fellow drivers. Keep yourselves safe and don’t drink and drive (or boat). Let’s make sure everyone has a safe and happy Victoria Day weekend!
