Parent Alert: DRPS lists trafficking indicators

DRPS Human Trafficking Unit (HTU) has identified some possible warning signs and indicators for parents.

HTU would also like to share indicators to look for when traveling and staying at hotels within different jurisdictions, said a statement.

The DRPS Human Trafficking Unit said it has a vast network of community resources that are available for victims of human trafficking even if they are not comfortable speaking with police.

The below indicators are based on what investigators have seen. There could be many more depending on the vulnerability of the victim:

Identifiers for parents

-New cell phone that parents did not purchase or multiple cell phones
-Expensive clothes, purse, jewelry or anything that stands out
-New unexplainable tattoos
-New secretive boyfriend or friends
-Increased alcohol or drug use
-Leaving home for days at a time (reported missing)
-School grades have changed drastically
-Visible bruises or unexplained injuries
-Child is nervous and always fighting with parents
-Child has stopped using social media

Human Trafficking incidents that occur in Durham Region most commonly occur in and around the motels/hotels along the 401 corridor.

Identifiers at Hotels/Motels

-One person checking in and others being brought in through a different door
-Not allowing the maid to clean the room daily
-Lots of towels being used daily
-Lots of people coming and going from the room
-Checking in with very little luggage or large amount of luggage
-Person checking in lives near the hotel
-Customer keeps extending their stay (paying cash daily)
-Person checking in is not ever seen again during the stay
-Side doors being propped open and unknown guests being brought to rooms

Victim Support Resources

The DRPS Human Trafficking Unit utilizes partnerships with the Durham Region Human Trafficking Coalition (www.stopht.com) to assist in the crisis intervention of survivors of human trafficking. Durham Regional Police also utilize many other agencies to assist in the ever-growing crime that is happening within our jurisdiction. The coalition website is geared towards local residents of Durham Region to facilitate resources for those that are not interested in disclosing to police. We, as a police service recommend residents utilize this free resource to assist in the recovery and prevention of human trafficking within our Region.

Anyone with information about human trafficking is urged to call 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5600 to speak with an investigator. If you’re not comfortable speaking with police, you can utilize www.stopht.com and select a resource you feel comfortable with.
