Impaired driver who struck officer during arrest released

A male is facing charges after he assaulted an officer while being arrested for impaired driving in Whitby.

On Saturday, July 27, at approximately 2:10 am, members of Central West division responded to an impaired driver call at a restaurant parking lot in the area of Taunton Road East and Garden Street. The suspect vehicle was observed driving in an unsafe and suspicious manner. Police arrived on scene and initiated a traffic stop by blocking the suspect vehicle. Officers spoke with the driver who exhibited signs of impairment. When officers attempted to arrest the suspect, he resisted and struck an officer repeatedly. The male was subsequently taken into custody.

The officer sustained minor injuries.

The man, age 46 from Oshawa is charged with: Operation While Impaired, Assault Peace Officer, and Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest.
