Lakeridge Health has announced that it will pilot a weapons detection system at the Emergency Department entrance of the Ajax Pickering Hospital from August 18 to 22.
The hospital said the short-term demonstration is part of ongoing efforts to maintain a safe and respectful environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
The system being tested is Evolv Express, a technology designed for busy public spaces such as hospitals. Lakeridge Health noted it is similar to the Xtract One SmartGateway, which was previously tested at the Oshawa Hospital Emergency Department. Evolv Express uses advanced sensors and artificial intelligence to detect potential weapons in a non-invasive manner.
According to Lakeridge Health, patients and visitors can expect:
- Quick, seamless screening: Phones, keys, water bottles, and other personal items do not need to be removed.
- Accessibility-friendly design: The system supports wheelchairs, walkers, and other assistive devices.
- Privacy protections: No personal or facial recognition data will be collected.
- Inclusive screening options: Alternative screening will be available for people with medical devices, mobility needs, or other considerations.
Lakeridge Health added that spiritual and cultural practices will continue to be respected throughout the pilot.
