Ontario invests $2.8mn in training programs for Durham workers

Ontario has announced more than $2.8 million in funding through the Skills Development Fund (SDF) Training Stream to help people in Durham Region and surrounding areas secure good-paying jobs in construction, manufacturing, and skilled trades.

“In the face of President Trump’s tariffs and the economic uncertainty they are causing, our government will always have the backs of Ontario workers,” said Premier Doug Ford. “By investing in training programs in Durham Region, we’re protecting Ontario workers by helping them get the skills they need to land better jobs and bigger paycheques.”

The $2.5 billion SDF is designed to equip Ontario workers with training and tools to secure in-demand jobs, while supporting competitiveness against U.S. tariffs and economic pressures. Through the SDF, Ontario is partnering with five organizations in the region to deliver free training programs in affected sectors:

  • Drew Carpentry — $806,426 to train people for entry-level framer positions in the homebuilding industry.
  • D&R Custom Steel Inc. — $613,000 for manufacturing sector training through four-week hands-on programs.
  • Substance Cares — $447,500 to train people with autism in construction and carpentry, with job coaching and inclusive job fairs.
  • Innovation Cluster — Peterborough and the Kawarthas — $186,240 to teach tradespeople how to start and run their own businesses.
  • FIRST Robotics Canada — $798,000 to offer upskilling and skilled trades workshops for students and teachers at Durham College and partner colleges.

“Our government is taking bold action to build the future of Ontario’s workforce,” said David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “These investments will help thousands of people in Durham Region and across Ontario gain the skills and experience they need to succeed, while supporting local employers and strengthening our economy.”

Since 2021, Ontario has invested $1.5 billion through the SDF Training and Capital Streams, helping train over one million workers for skilled trades and other in-demand careers. The 2025 Budget: A Plan to Protect Ontario includes an additional $1 billion over the next three years, bringing the total SDF investment to $2.5 billion.
