Man robbed at knifepoint at Facebook Marketplace meet

Durham police are searching for two suspects after an armed street-level robbery in Whitby during an online marketplace transaction.

According to police, officers from Central West Division were called around 7:30 pm on Tuesday, August 12, to the area of Winchester Road East and Queen Street.

Investigators say the victim had arranged to sell a microphone through Facebook Marketplace. While speaking with the first suspect, a second man approached, pointed a knife at the victim, and grabbed the microphone. Both suspects ran south on St. Thomas Street before fleeing in a dark-coloured Acura SUV.

Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspects. No physical injuries were reported.

Police describe the first suspect as a Black male, about 20 years old, 5’9” with a slim build, wearing his hair in dreads. He was last seen in a purple and black jacket, black tracksuit, and white Nike running shoes.

The second suspect is described as a Black male, about 20 years old, wearing a blue medical mask, a black hooded sweater with a white emblem on the front and a large graphic on the back, black pants, and white running shoes.

Anyone with information or security footage from the area of Winchester Road East, Queen Street, or St. Thomas Street between 7:10 pm and 7:25 pm on August 12 is asked to contact Detective Constable Atell of the Central West Criminal Investigative Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1827.
