Leaf, yard waste collection ends Friday

The Regional Municipality of Durham has announced that seasonal leaf and yard waste collection is ending December 11 and will resume in the spring of 2021.

It said the last curbside collection for seasonal leaf and yard waste will take place the week of December 7.

Residents should check their waste management calendars, visit durham.ca/waste or download the Durham Region Waste App to see their specific collection days.

Where: The region collects leaf and yard waste in the townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge, the City of Pickering, the Town of Ajax and the Municipality of Clarington.

Leaf and yard waste collection for City of Oshawa and Town of Whitby residents is the responsibility of those individual municipalities. These residents should contact their local municipality for information about collection frequency and set-out limits.

Note: When preparing your seasonal leaf and yard waste for curbside collection, please follow the following set-out instructions:

  • Only use paper yard waste bags or clearly labelled, returnable open-top containers.
  • Yard waste cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms (44 pounds).
  • Securely tie brush in bundles up to one metre (three feet) long and 76 centimetres (30 inches) wide. No branch should be more than 10 centimetres (4 inches) in diameter.
  • Yard waste set-out in cardboard boxes, blue boxes, green bins or plastic bags will not be collected.
  • Please ensure yard waste is not buried by snow, frozen to the ground or on top of, or behind snowbanks – ensure yard waste is fully accessible for collection.

Due to high volumes of leaf and yard waste being set out for curbside collection this time of year, there may be collection delays. Residents are reminded to have materials out by 7 am. Please leave your leaf and yard waste out until collection is provided. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the free curbside leaf and yard waste collection program until December 11.
