Lockdown in Whitby school after one taken to hospital

A stabbing incident marred the start of the Safe and Accepting Schools Week at the Father Leo J Austin Catholic Secondary School, in Whitby.

Police are on scene at Father Leo Austin located at 1020 Dryden Boulevard, Whitby for a stabbing investigation. The school is currently in lockdown. Further information to follow, said an alert from Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).

There was no report of the incident posted on Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) site or media channels.

However, the DCDSB yesterday said: “Today marks the start of Safe and Accepting Schools Week; the first of our safety and well-being focused weeks here at Durham Catholic. We at Durham Catholic strive to create positive school climates where all members of the school community feel safe and accepted. This week, our schools will be focusing on school safety and will be scheduling various emergency response drills.

An hour after the first alert, the DRPS sounded the all clear. “The lockdown is currently being lifted.”

However, it said one person is in police custody, while one person was transported to a Toronto-area hospital following the incident.
