Durham Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after swastikas were reported to have been etched in the washroom of a Whitby library.
Whitby has previously seen similar hate crimes, one last month when Whitby library was the site of swastika graffiti, and last August when a swastika was burned into a playing field at Prince of Wales Park. Town Mayor Elizabeth Roy has condemned the incidents and Councillor Chris Leahy had promised to put forward a motion to ban Nazi symbols (see below).
On Friday, January 10, members of Central West Division responded to a call for what was reported as hate-motivated graffiti in the public washroom at the Central Whitby Library located at 405 Dundas Street West.
An employee reported finding several small swastikas etched on the wall in the washroom. Officers attended but stated they were unable to identify any suspects.
On Monday, January 27, officers were called to the Central Whitby Library after staff reported finding two more swastikas etched into the washroom.
An investigator from DRPS’ Central-West Division Criminal Investigations Branch attended the library on Tuesday, January 28, to review video footage from the previous incidents. While there, staff reported finding another swastika etched into the wall of the bathroom.
Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact Cst. Bandstra of the Central West Division Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520 at ext. 1805.
