Whitby fund approved, Ajax unhappy over denial

The Ontario Government has announced $19,918,750 in funding to support the expansion of Columbus Road from Country Lane to Ashburn Road in Whitby. According to the announcement, construction is anticipated to begin in 2026 and take about two years to complete.

The Town of Ajax is disappoined after it was denied funding for a downtown project (Hunt Street extension), under the same Ontario program (see below).

According to the Town of Whitby, investments like this align with the town’s housing, infrastructure, and Community Strategic Plan priorities, while also addressing the funding gap for municipalities.

The new road will help connect future homes to road, sidewalk, and bridge infrastructure, which the Whitby says will support economic growth in Whitby and Brooklin.

The announcement states that this funding is being delivered through the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing Stream under the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, which aims to help build, repair, and maintain municipal roads, bridges, and other infrastructure that supports housing growth in communities like Whitby.

“On behalf of the Town of Whitby, I want to thank the Ontario government for this significant infrastructure investment. Expanding Columbus Road is an important step in unlocking housing opportunities, supporting economic growth, and ensuring that we can meet the needs of our growing community. The Town of Whitby is committed to ensuring all residents have access to safe, affordable and diverse housing options, and this investment will help us meet that goal,” said Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy.
