New kayak launcher at Port Perry Pier opens

Township of Scugog yesterday announced that the new kayak launcher at the Port Perry Pier has been opened.

It offered a big thank you Comptons and the Scugog Kayak Club for helping facilitate this “wonderful addition” to the community, and hoped everyone enjoys the launcher this summer.

As part of the Township of Scugog’s Waterfront Action Plan, council had approved the installation of a kayak launcher at the Government Pier.

A kayak launcher is a piece of equipment attached to a dock that aids paddlers in pushing their kayaks into the water easily while also increasing the accessibility of paddlers to use Lake Scugog for kayaking.

The Scugog Kayak Club, newly formed in 2023, secured a grant of $5,000 from the Comptons to cover the cost of the launcher. The leftover funding from this donation will be kept in reserves in anticipation that future donations can be collected to cover the cost of a second launcher to be installed at the Caesarea Pier.

Annual installation of the launcher is expected in mid-April next year with removal by October 31, weather dependent, the township said.

The launcher was installed on July 4 with a ceremonial ribbon cutting.

Off-Leash Dog Park open

Township of Scugog also announced that the Off-Leash Dog Park is now open.

“Thank you for your patience throughout the closure,” it said.
