No interruptions to emergency care: Bowmanville Hospital

Lakeridge Health has announced that there have been no interruptions to services at the emergency department of Bowmanville Hospital.

On July 28, Lakeridge Health had announced that it was temporarily closing its Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and transferring patients to nearby hospitals.

Last week, Lakeridge Health made the difficult decision to temporarily relocate the Bowmanville Hospital  ICU and consolidate critical care services to the Ajax Pickering and Oshawa hospitals, said a Lakeridge update issued Friday.

“There was no loss of critical care bed capacity delivered by Lakeridge Health critical care teams as a result of this consolidation. And there have been no interruptions to services at the emergency department.

“We, along with many hospitals, continue to face significant staff shortage and have been focusing our efforts on ensuring we have safe staffing levels to be able to provide the care required in the Bowmanville hospital ICU,” said the update.

It said “as patient safety remains a priority, we are not yet able to resume services at Bowmanville Hospital ICU. We continue to monitor the situation and review all available options and opportunities to ensure the return of service as soon as it is safe to do so. We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available. We recognize the impact that this has had on our patients, their families, and our communities.

We thank everyone for their patience and understanding during these challenging times,” added the statement.

The staffing crisis has been brewing for sometime. On June 30 Lakeridge Health issued an alert – Attention: We are experiencing longer than usual wait times in our Emergency Departments. We are working very hard to get everyone seen as quickly as possible. Please be patient and kind. Thank you for your cooperation”.
