No street checks done by DRPS in 2021: Police Report

No street checks were conducted by Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) officers, according to the 2021 Police Report.

Therefore, there were no public complaints, general information requests or personal record information requests made under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Privacy Act relating to information collected pursuant to the Regulation, the report pointed out.

It said there were no instances in which a police officer did not carry out their duty to inform the individual for the reasons outlined in Section 6 of the Regulation or where an individual was not given a receipt document because the individual did not indicate that they wanted it.

As there were no attempted collections, there were no instances where an officer did not provide a receipt for any of the reasons prescribed in the Regulation. The restricted database was not accessed for any purpose in 2021, said the report.

A regulation in the Police Services Act, known as the Collection of Identifying Information in Certain Circumstances — also known as street checks — defines a police interaction and regulates how identifying information may be collected.

15 crimes against persons a day

There are, on average, some 15 crimes against persons committed in Durham daily, according to the 2021 Durham Police Report.

Total criminal code violations showed a marginal 3-year average increase. However, the good news is that crimes against property fell some 3.8 per cent.

Drug violations rose almost 25 per cent.

The report pointed out that Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) officers patrol the about 2,500 square kilometres that makes up Durham Region, backed up by a team of civilian members.

As the 10th largest municipal police service in Canada, DRPS faces many challenges, but is constantly evolving in order to help prevent and solve issues in the community every day, it said.
