One of two bodies found is that of missing Ava Burton

Durham Police yesterday said results of a post mortem examination conducted on human remains located in Mariposa Township has confirmed the identity of one of the two missing females from Whitby.

Members of the City of Kawartha Lakes Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were investigating reports of human remains that were located on The Glen Road in Mariposa Township shortly after 7 pm, on October 24. Later that evening, DRPS Investigative Team and the Forensic Identification Unit were notified and assisted with the investigation, said a DRPS statement.

Post Mortem results confirmed the identity of one of the bodies recovered as Ava Burton, age 58 of Scepter Place in Whitby. Investigators have not yet been able to confirm the identity of the second victim recovered at the scene. Post Mortem results indicate obvious signs of trauma to both victims, police said.

On October 22, investigators arrested Joshua Burton, age 30 of Whitby, and charged him with two counts of Second Degree Murder. The suspect is the son of Ava and grandson of Tatilda Noble, 85, also missing.

Ava Burton was one of two females who were listed as missing after officers were unable to locate them during a wellness check requested by a family member on October 14, 2021.

DRPS thanked the OPP for their assistance in this investigation.

Anyone with new information about these homicides is asked to contact Det. McDermott of the Major Crime Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5411.
