Ontario investing $30.8mn on 680-seat new school

The Ontario government said it is investing $30.8 million to build a new elementary school to support families in the Oshawa area.

The province is investing $30.8 million for a new yet-unnamed North Oshawa Public School (Kedron) to be located at a site to be acquired in Oshawa. This Durham District School Board (DDSB) project will create 680 elementary spaces, said a provincial statement issued Friday.

“We are grateful to our ministry partners for their ongoing support, and look forward to welcoming students in 2027.” said Camille Williams-Taylor, DDSB Director of Education.

“Our schools are more than places of learning and connection during the day; they also serve as neighbourhood hubs, supporting clubs, sports, the arts, events, and bringing together our communities. This commitment to Oshawa students is also an investment in families and the broader community, and we are excited to start construction.” according to Deb Oldfield, Vice Chair and DDSB Oshawa Trustee.

“The funding…is great news for our community,” said Todd McCarthy, MPP for Durham. “Through this investment, we’re creating opportunities for students to thrive today and well into the future.”

Ontario continues to make investments to build and expand schools. Over the past two years, the government has committed $1.3 billion annually in new school buildings, additions and renovations across the province, the highest level of school capital funding in Ontario’s history.
