Funding for Clarington art and Scugog First Nations libraries

The Ontario government is making investments in Clarington to support jobs, empower local artists, and help community arts and culture organizations thrive.

Todd McCarthy, MPP for Durham, announced that the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington will receive $15,359 through the Ontario Arts Council, an agency of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming.

“Our government understands the important role that the arts play in fostering dynamic and thriving communities across Ontario,” said McCarthy, MPP. “This support will help Clarington’s artists and arts organizations continue to make a positive impact on our economy, create good jobs and draw more visitors to our community.”

The Public Art Galleries: Operating program grant is designed to maximize the positive impact of Ontario’s cultural sector in local communities throughout the province. The program provides operating support to not-for-profit, professional public art galleries in Ontario to help them make or present high-quality work for a wide range of audiences and participants. In Clarington, this funding will enable the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington to offer educational and community-based activities, such as festivals, summer camps and residencies.

Investments into First Nation public libraries in Scugog

The Ontario government is investing an additional $1.25 million annually in First Nations public libraries to ensure continued delivery of in-demand resources, services and programming to the communities that they serve.

“Our government’s investment in First Nations public libraries will help strengthen and empower the communities which they serve, enabling access to resources, services and programming for all residents” said McCarthy. “The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation is a vibrant community steeped in rich cultural tradition where the local library serves as the beacon for the preservation of the Mississauga’s cultural heritage.”

Annual First Nation Salary Supplement allocations will increase from $13,000 to up to $35,000 per eligible library to support the retention and hiring of librarians and support staff. Additionally, current Public Library Operating Grant allocations for First Nation public libraries will double, with a minimum annual grant of $1,500 per eligible library provided to help ensure stable operations.
