Oshawa fire services welcome new chief

The City of Oshawa and Oshawa Fire Services congratulated Stephen Barkwell on his appointment to Fire Chief, effective August 1.

Chief Barkwell began his career as a firefighter with Oshawa Fire Services in 1999 and was promoted through the ranks, most recently holding the position of Deputy Fire Chief – Community Risk and Reduction / Professional Development.

Barkwell brings over 20 years of experience to his new position, including extensive experience in both emergency work and training positions for several firefighting disciplines. He also has extensive experience at the provincial level with legislation, health and safety, human rights and labour relations.

Chief Barkwell will oversee all aspects of Fire Services and takes over from retired Chief Derrick Clark.

He holds a Master’s Certificate in Public Sector Management from Ontario Tech University, a Certificate in Project Management for Leaders, Business Administration and Management from York University and is working towards a Certificate in Fire Services Executive Management from Humber College.
