Oshawa hydro pole fires to be a thing of past

Fire on wooden electricity poles will be a thing of the past, according to Oshawa Power following a pole fire in the city yesterday.

It said pole fires are caused by voltage tracking down porcelain insulators, through metal brackets, and to the pole.

This will soon be a thing of the past, Oshawa Power said while pointing out that its Porcelain Change Out Program is more than 60 per cent complete. These will be replaced with polymer alternatives, eliminating pole fires caused by tracking.

Earlier, Osawa Power crews responded to a pole fire at King Street and Cadillac Avenue. After a brief road closure, the roads were reopened.

Meanwhile, the Town of Whitby Fire and Emergency Services said fire crews were on location in the area of Mary Street East and Garden Street. They are cleaning up from fighting an apartment fire.
