The City of Oshawa has clarified that its radar message boards are traffic calming devices and do not take photos of passing vehicles or are used to issue tickets to speeding drivers.
Oshawa introduced the council-directed Radar Message Board program in 2020, to improve road safety on local streets with reported speeding concerns.
It said each Radar Message Board device is equipped with radar technology to detect the speed of approaching vehicles. The Message Board records and displays vehicle speeds back to motorists.
“This traffic calming tool is an educational instrument designed to increase motorist awareness and safety. These signs do not take photos of vehicles or issue speeding tickets and data collection does not influence where automated speed enforcement will be placed,” said a city statement.
It said there are up to ten (10) Radar Message Board devices for each ward that are installed at various locations. Locations can be requested through your ward councillor.
The Region of Durham also places Radar Speed Signs on Regional Roads within Oshawa. A list of Regional roads in Oshawa can be found at oshawa.ca.
