Oshawa trail closed, flood alert in effect till coming Sunday

The City of Oshawa has announced that Harmony Trail has been closed due to flooding until further notice. It is closed from the King Street to Bond Street.

Meanwhile, the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (Cloca) Flood Outlook Statement is in effect through Sunday January 14, or until further notice, following Tuesday’s rains.

Cloca said the Surface Water Monitoring Centre (SWMC) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), is tracking a series of low-pressure systems set to move into the Cloca watershed over the next four days. The first system was expected to enter the area on Tuesday, followed by another on Friday. Each system has the potential to bring 20–25mm of precipitation, with the cumulative 5-day total ranging from 40-60mm.

The forecasted precipitation combined with partially frozen ground conditions could result in increased runoff causing higher than normal water levels and flows in our streams. Widespread flooding is not anticipated, however fast flowing water and flooding of low lying areas and roadways may be expected in flood prone areas, said a Cloca statement.

It is asking all residents to stay away from all watercourses, shorelines, and structures such as bridges, culverts and dams. Increased wave activity, elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks and Lake Ontario shorelines continue to make these locations extremely dangerous.  Please remind children of these dangers.
