Pat Bayly Square outdoor rink opens for skating

The Town of Ajax yesterday announced that the Pat Bayly Square outdoor rink is officially open for skating for free. No pre-registration required.

The outdoor skating is on refrigerated ice surface.

It said the facility is open daily from 9 am to 9 pm, but asked visitors to call 365-885-3848 to check rink status before heading out to skate.

It also asked users to observe rules and safety protocols, adding that hockey is not permitted at any time.

“All skaters at Pat Bayly Square must maintain a physical distance of six feet to those not in their household at all times. The town is strongly recommending that masks or cloth face coverings be worn on and off the ice surface and masks are mandatory while in the building. Indoor washroom access will be available, however, change rooms are closed and skaters should come ready to skate,” said a town statement.

Ice-making and maintenance are weather-dependent and mechanical issues could arise. Circumstances can make it a challenge to communicate well in advance, and are beyond our control. We thank you for your patience and understanding, it said adding “Have fun and don’t forget to bundle up!”

Whitby said the town is also expecting two outdoor natural ice skating rinks to open in the New Year for residents to enjoy.

Meanwhile, residents can skate indoors at Iroquois Park Sports Centre or McKinney Centre this holiday season. View the full schedule of public skating and shinny programs at whitby.ca/Skate.
