Pickering submits proposal for VIA’s High Frequency Rail stop

The City of Pickering has submitted a station proposal to VIA Rail’s High Frequency Rail (HFR) team, according to the city’s budget document released recently.

“In 2024, staff finalized and submitted the second phase of the station proposal, detailing the concept and corridor design for the HFR team,” said the document.

“Advocacy efforts will continue as the broader HFR project moves toward the procurement process,” it added.

HFR Project

The HFR project by VIA Rail represents one of Canada’s most significant investments in rail infrastructure.

The City of Pickering, together with the Region of Durham, presented a business case to the HFR team in 2022 to support the development of a stop in Pickering.

The VIA Rail HFR project will connect Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Trois-Rivières and Québec City. The HFR network will include mainly new, electrified and dedicated tracks that extend over 1,000 km. Travelling speeds could eventually reach 200 km per hour.

On July 24 this year, the three consortia pre-qualified in the fall of 2023 (bidding teams) have all submitted their proposals. The next phase involves evaluating the submission to select the Private Sector Developer-Partner who will collaborate with us throughout the entire project, according to VIA Rail.

Oshawa already has a station stop for the regular VIA Rail service.
