Owner charged after dog left in hot car had to be euthanized

Durham police are reminding the public of the dangers of leaving pets in vehicles after a dog died from heat stroke in Oshawa over the weekend.

On Sunday, August 3, officers from Central West Division responded to a report of suspected animal abuse near Simcoe Street North and Winchester Road West. Two dogs had been seen inside a vehicle for an extended period and appeared to be in distress.

Police say they later located the vehicle at a nearby veterinary clinic, where one of the dogs was in critical condition and had to be euthanized due to heat-related injuries.

The owner of the vehicle was arrested and charged.

With temperatures expected to rise, Durham Regional Police are urging residents not to leave animals unattended in vehicles, even for a few minutes, as the consequences can be fatal.
