Police report rise in persons falling victim to fraud scam

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has issued an alert to Durham Region residents, over a scam that has seen a rising number of victims.

“DRPS has seen a rise in persons falling victim to a fraud scam involving paying for someone’s taxi using your debit/credit card,” said the police alert.

It said a victim is approached by a suspect who is asking for help to pay for a cab. The story is that the suspect only has cash, and the cab (which is standing by) only takes debit or credit.

The suspect offers the victim cash, and in exchange, the victim taps their debit card on the payment terminal inside the taxi.

Victims later find out their bank accounts have been comproised, police said.
