A 21-year-old Toronto man is facing multiple charges after Durham Regional Police seized a firearm and stolen vehicle during a traffic stop in Pickering.
According to police, the incident occurred around 5:30 pm on Tuesday, May 20. Officers from West Division were conducting proactive patrols in the parking lot of The Shops at Pickering City Centre on Kingston Road when they noticed a suspicious vehicle. A licence plate check revealed the plate belonged to a different vehicle.
Officers initiated a traffic stop and determined the vehicle had been reported stolen. As they attempted to arrest the driver, the suspect fled on foot. With assistance from the DRPS Air1 helicopter, officers located and arrested the suspect a short distance away without further incident.
A subsequent search of the stolen vehicle uncovered a firearm inside, police said.
A 21-year-old male, from Toronto, was charged and held for a bail hearing. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.
