In September, Durham Police had issued a ‘Help Solve a Crime’ appeal seeking public assistance in identifying a man linked to multiple telephone banking frauds in Clarington, according to law enforcement officials.
Authorities have now identified the suspect, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Police reported that on Tuesday, September 24, a female victim received a phone call from a man who claimed to work for her bank. The caller informed the victim that fraudulent transactions had been made on her debit and credit cards and that her accounts had been compromised. Officials stated that the man requested personal information and instructed the victim to provide her PIN number to receive replacement cards. The caller then informed the victim that a courier would arrive at her residence to collect the compromised cards and that new ones would be sent the next day.
While the victim remained on the phone, police said a second man arrived at her home and retrieved her debit and credit cards. The victim was then advised to stay on the call due to technical difficulties before the line disconnected.
Authorities stated that after the suspect collected the victim’s cards, multiple fraudulent transactions were carried out. The suspect was captured on security cameras in Bowmanville, Courtice, and Oshawa completing these transactions.
A 32-year-old male of Markham is wanted for 21 offences. Name and further details available at www.drps.ca.
Anyone with cellphone, dashcam, surveillance footage, or information about this incident is asked to contact D/Cst. Kane of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5371.
