Scam Alert: Do not download the app, says police

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has issued a scam alert to residents bringing awareness about a new scam that is being popularized.

Victims usually receive a call from a scammer persuading them to download an app on their computer or device.

Once the app is downloaded, scammers will have remote access to the victim’s computer, including their personal documents and private information. This can lead to the scammer draining the victim’s bank account. Never allow remote access to an unverified person, police said.

“The safest way to ensure you are not being defrauded is to physically go into the business claiming to call, or call back the legitimate business phone number to verify. Please be aware of these scams as well as all other common scams. Knowledge is the key to staying safe and in control. If it’s too good to be true, it is. Spreading this information to loved ones and friends is your number one tool for prevention and safety,” police said.

DRPS has compiled a list of common scams that have become very prevalent in our community. These can be viewed at http://drps.ca.

If you believe you or a family member are the victim of a scam please contact Durham Police or your local police service.
