Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has announced that more than 1,600 traffic tickets were issued in just four days during the back-to-school safety campaign.
The DRPS Traffic Services Branch, in conjunction with officers from all divisions, conducted a zero-tolerance traffic enforcement campaign targeting school and community safety zones during the week of September 3-6.
“This year, more than 1,600 traffic tickets were issued during this blitz, which included 757 tickets for speeding, 242 tickets for stop sign violations, four tickets for cell phone violations, 31 tickets for seatbelt violations, two tickets for stunt driving, 13 tickets for driving while under suspension, and four vehicles [were] impounded,” said a police report.
The goal of this annual ‘In the Zone’ enforcement campaign was to ensure high officer visibility and proactive enforcement in and around school zones during the first week back to school.
The DRPS thanked local school officials and members of the public for supporting this traffic initiative.
